Darla & Marty Kaarre --The Team
Darla and Marty quit their jobs and moved four of their kids and a dog across the country to Montana in 2001. They spent their first winter in a one-room bunkhouse and founded Athelas the next summer. They guide the mission and direction of Athelas, and you'll see them with guitar or wooden spoon in hand, mentoring, serving and loving students and staff.
Marty Kaarre
Marty brings to this ministry a lifetime love of the outdoors and a commitment to serving His Lord by serving others. He has been a parish pastor for twenty five plus years. He is an avid outdoorsman and keeping up with him on the trail is a challenge. He leads many trips into wilderness terrain. Here he loves teaching the mysteries of grace and biblical principles. He is a writer and musician as well!
Darla Kaarre
Darla continues her passion for education, service, and the outdoors by planning, organizing and developing retreats for Athelas. She cooks for many of the retreats and also develops and leads bible study and other activities . She has been a teacher, youth leader, Director or Christian Education, and principal. She holds a Master of Arts in Education and loves teaching in any setting. She grew up on a ranch in Montana, daughter of third generation Montanans in the Outfitting business. She loves cooking and creating food for nourishment of body, soul and spirit.
Family Kaarre
It is likely that sometime during a trip with Athelas Outdoor Ministry you will meet Nikki and Jeremy Meyer, Erika, Randy, Krista and Elly Kaarre. They are the rather off the wall offspring (and token son-in-law) of Darla and Marty and help in various and numerous ways as they keep them on track. All are experienced outdoors people and add many many up front and behind the scenes expertise to this ministry.
