Day Camp Field Instructor

Field instructors will be responsible for the physical safety, emotional well-being, and spiritual encouragement of a group of 6-12 year olds. The field instructors is the keystone of the day camp program: although they will have support and help, they will be responsible for making sure that on a day-to-day level, kids are healthy and happy, no one gets left in the outhouse, paperwork is done, snacks get on the bus, and all the other little details are in place.

Tasks: Communicate and cooperate with your co-instructors and volunteers. Supervise and mentor interns and volunteers. Teach 1-2 hours of lessons per day on the theme of the week and incorporate principles from the theme into metaphors for adventure activities. Use facilitation techniques, activities, a sense of humor and your bag of tricks to help your group grow closer and develop spiritually. Demonstrate the love of Christ by your words and actions with children. Teach and lead flat water and moving water canoeing and kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and swimming activities. Evaluate conditions, students and risks to make decisions in outdoor situations. Accompany the group on climbing and horseback riding trips (these activities are run by outside companies, so willingness to participate is needed but experience is not). Plan and lead games and activities during drop-off, pick-up, and transition times. Lead one evening family session and coordinate meals and logistics for one overnight a week. Help refine the program structure, schedule and methods using your own creativity, ingenuity and gifts. Drive our 25 passenger bus or other vehicles.
